Homeschooled children ages 5-11 will explore STEAM activities. This month, school aged kids and tweens will read books, play games and do activities themed around special needs and then be invited to participate in Paws to Read. From 11:00-11:45, we will focus on the deaf experience with a member of the North Carolina Hands and Voices chapter and a member of the Cued Speech Transliteration program. Children in attendance will have an interactive, multi-layered experience learning basic American Sign Language as well as observing cued speech and learning more about how deaf children experience music and language, and well end with a Q&A where you can ask questions to a deaf adult! From 11:45-12:15, we will have open stations and some special tools like Visual Simulation Glasses and a Beep Ball to explore what its like to live with certain disabilities. From 12:15-1:00, we will be learning about Braille and the blind experience, and we will end with a bonus hour of Paws to Read, where children can boost reading skills and confidence by reading to a certified therapy dog. These back-to-back programs will not have a scheduled break, but you are welcome to join us for just one program or stay for it all. This year we are requiring registration and capping at 50, so sign up now!
