Be a part of the narrative. Airing Out the "Dirty" Laundry is an ongoing community art movement that invites participation in two distinct, but connected ways. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, Shane Manier of Guerilla Poets, and local artist, Andrea Downs are working in partnership to invite the Charlotte community to be a part of this project. Laundry Days are a call for women* to gather, to listen and be heard, and an opportunity to create pieces of visual storytelling that share and reveal stories of strength, hope, unity, and resistance of oppression, injustice, and exclusion.
Library: Allegra Westbrooks Regional
Location: Randolph Room
Other Information:
While materials are always provided at Laundry Days, it is helpful if you bring an article of clothing, textile, pieces of fabric, letters, papers, or other personal items that are significant and connected to the story that you will share in your piece. These stories are collected and then joined together on laundry clotheslines in ongoing installations throughout our community and at The Mint Museum Uptown in the summer of 2020. Each story has a top layer that flows freely and is meant to be lifted as an invitation to the viewer to engage in and reveal the story underneath. This project was made possible, in part, with funding from ASC.
